What is Pilates?

A Brief History

Pilates was created in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates, who believed movement was medicine for both the body and the mind. Originally called Contrology, his method focused on strength, balance, and precision — using breath and controlled movement to build resilience from the inside out. Today, Pilates continues to honour Joseph’s legacy, evolving into a practice that supports people of all ages and abilities.

The Reformer & The Movement

The Reformer is a specialised Pilates machine designed by Joseph himself. It uses springs, a moving carriage, and adjustable straps to create resistance — supporting or challenging your body depending on the exercise.
Reformer Pilates is known for its smooth, flowing movements that strengthen, lengthen, and stabilise the body. Every exercise is mindful and intentional, connecting movement with breath.

Did You Know?

Joseph Pilates was a German prisoner of war in WWI in the UK.  This is where he began developing his method by helping injured soldiers move and recover, even attaching springs to hospital beds to create resistance training (can you visualise the foundations of the Reformer bed we use today?)

Did You Know?

Joseph drew inspiration from animals, especially cats. Joseph admired the way cats moved, with grace, strength, and control, and incorporated that fluid, mindful quality into his exercises.
